Here's a interesting take on pirating....

"Now that internet is free for all, the copyright way to make money is going the way of the dinasaur, authors and artist will need to make money the old fashioned way, by performing live.

So all these self infatuated artists and writers are going to have to come to grips with the fact that they will have to find another way to make money from their talent."

By interesting I of course meant batass crazy. Performing live...does that mean I sit in front of an audience and type while they watch or do I charge a fee for them to listen to me read the story?

Shared Term Papers are offering authors the opportunity to have their names added to a database that states you don't want to have your books shared on their site.

per Shared Term Papers "The following list of authors have all requested not to have their books shared on this site. Please respect their wishes by not requesting or uploading the following authors. Any uploads/requests from the following list will either be immediately edited, deleted or requested to be edited from your thread."

If you haven't already did so, contact them by PMing any Moderator or the site Administrator or by contacting the Administrator via email at: admin@sharetermpapers.com.

Now I emailed them Dec 4 and asked to have my name added to the list but it wasn't up there as of today. So I emailed them again this evening. I'm going to assume that it was just lost in spam land and give them the benefit of the doubt. I'll let you know if they respond.

For those of you who have been outed as pirates, whether you be contribute or benefit from the piracy, especially those of you who want to throw the Christianity defense ie I am God fearing and Jesus knows I didn't steal anything, I want y'all to get your bibles out and follow me in THE WORD. Mark 12:24 basically it says that even if you error in ignorance you have still err'd. The fact that you claim to not know or have known you were committing or had committed a crime does not negate the fact that you did in fact do so.
I can not and will not deny that a large sum of reader find small pubed or indy pubed authors via shady means, ie theft and piracy. However, the fact remains that once you open that book, you are presented with knowledge regarding the illegality of possessing, reading, redistributing that work.
It's not just fluff and gloss and filler. It’s a statement of fact and law and education that is protection for not just the publisher and the author but for you.That your ego led you to skim over and not comprehend the words is not an excuse or and absolving force in your crime.
The law in all 50 states says that whether knowingly or unknowingly having reasonable access to; receiving, possessing, and redistributing or facilitating the redistribution of stolen property is punishable by law.
You have an obligation and responsibility to do better. The moment you see a caveat or a copyright notice, the very moment that you friend an author and learn that ebooks are not transferable, the very moment that you see THE DISCRIPTION OF THE DOWN LOAD IS THE COPY RIGHT INFRINGEMENT INFORMATION PAGE, you have a responsibility to yourself to not get caught up and to your friends TO NOT LEAD THEM INTO TEMPTATION, and to the owners of the work NOT TO TRESPASS against them.
A message from a pirater who we will call "Jane" says, she felt shame for how she didn’t remove herself from the situation and she meant no harm. I believe that. I really do. But she had an obligation the moment I or anyone else on fb took her in, to say hey I found you on this website. True she wasn’t active for some time, that time should have been longer. She herself uploaded 7 books that were accessed hundreds of times. Not to mention the 2000 books she accessed. That means that she broke the law some 2000 times, in her pursuit of good reads and networking. She may not have read all the books, she didn’t stop and contact an author or publisher either. If she had we’d have come to this conclusion a long time ago.
I believe in her right to defend herself. I believe she is sincere when she apologizes, what I will believe more is exactly what Lena Matthews said of herself “I am not perfect…I’ve downloaded music…but I will never do that shit again.”
Because now that "Jane" knows better, she must DO better.
And that goes for all pirates SHIPPING AND RECEIVING!
And for authors who don’t care; how very cavalier of you. The perceived loss is imaged for you all because you reconcile it as advertising “if they get one they’ll buy the others” ( not when your whole catalog is up for free…and for some of you that is THE EXACT GOSPEL PUT IT RIGHT BETWEEN AMOS and OBADIAH) , “they never would have bought it anyway so its not like I truly lost a sale” ( oh how naive you are, if fortune five hundred companies treat their products the way you think of yourself and your work every last one of them would be broke. Just because you made 20-60 thousand dollars, does not mean that your publisher truly made a profit. Each time an ebook is given away for free it negates 1.5 actually units sold. By the time you figure up the cost of the time it took to produce your book when you could have worked a minimum wage job, the amount it cost to pay for edits, art and advertising you are so far in the red that you OWE your publisher money.) but that’s cool that you don’t care and can't be bothered. Stop saying that, stop glibly telling congress and law makers that shit, because it effects the bottom line for every author out there. Because you don’t care, (for what ever reason, you’re rich, or you already hit your quota) you send a message to pirates and their facilitators that it's okay to take advantage of those around you WHO DO CARE.
And also for a special few authors who “ain’t got time”. Some of you were on hard times recently, and you fellow authors dug deep for you, wrote books for you. Donated money to you. Where do you think that came from? Bill Gates didn’t send it. Your fans (the majority of them) did not send it. The pirates didn’t organize fundraisers or calls for action to get it. You might want to re-evaluate that line of thought. Because you are, in some of your statements, telling your peers and colleagues that you don’t give a fugg about them. The people who support your works and pimp your works so that when they go live and hit shelves they can have 100’s and 1000’s of sales day on the first week. Loyal fans, the fans that line your pockets see the way you treat your peers and they buy based on the person you are, not just your work. You might want to stop shitting on your support before it falls from under you and you really have find work/life outside of writing.

Library.nu, Book Downloading Site, Targeted In Injunctions Requested By 17 Publishers

A large coalition of publishing firms and related trade organizations has taken legal action against what the Association of American Publishers in Washington, D.C., described on Wednesday as "one of the largest pirate web-based businesses in the world."

At the request of 17 publishing companies in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany, including HarperCollins, Oxford University Press and Macmillan, a Munich judge on Monday granted injunctions against illegal posting or sharing of online book files by two websites. Library.nu is alleged to have posted links to hundreds of thousands of illegal PDF copies of books since December 2010, Ed McCoyd, an attorney for the Association of American Publishers, told The Huffington Post. The majority of these uploads allegedly went through the website iFile.it, he said.

Or is it because they're afraid of losing free access to Deadwood and the Black Keys? Wikipedia has thousands of volunteers and brags that they keep the site's content accurate. Why can't they regulate more rigorously for copyright violation, too? Too much of a bother?

Should the government be able to shut down Facebook because one user posts a link to copyrighted content? Of course not. But should Facebook and Google do a better job monitoring - and stop profiteering off- their users' access to illegal content? Absolutely. And, you know what, they're smart enough to figure it out."

I'm signed up to Google alerts to keep a track of my books. This lets me know when reviews come in or people are discussing my books. It's a really handy feature and without it I'd have to spend hours every week trawling through the search engines. I always get excited when an alert comes through because it means someone has posted something on the net about one of my books.

I got one of those alerts today and I clicked through to see what it could be... It was a torrent site. On that site there were several copies of Paying her Debt, several copies! PDF, Zip files the whole shabang. I gaped at the screen for a moment and scrolled down, shocked at what I was seeing. Now don't get me wrong this is not my first experience of piracy. I get web hits every month or so with the search terms, 'The Kiss free read', 'Download The Valentine's Fae for free' and so on. But this is the first time I've seen a whole screen with copies of my book ready and waiting for someone to download.

It gets worse. On this site when someone has succesfully downloaded a file a thumbs up gets posted. You can use this feature to keep track of how many times a file has been downloaded. For Paying her Debt there have been over 700 successful downloads. SEVEN HUNDRED! That is, in terms of my royalty rate, over $1400, not to mention the money my publisher would have made, which then gets invested in supporting other upcoming writers, and encourages them to contract my next book! The Kiss has been downloaded several hundred times as has The Valentine's Fae and Twas a Dark and Delicious Christmas. All in all over $3000 worth of my books have been downloaded illegally, and that doesn't even take into account other sites they might be on... to be honest I'm not even going to look, it's too depressing to see where else they might have been stolen from.

Yep, I said stolen, because that's what ebook piracy is!

I write the books, my publisher puts money in to pay an editor, to create stunning cover art and to market. The final product belongs to both of us. We've worked hard to get it out there... and in return we sell it. That's how the system works. And you know what really annoys the hell out of me? They're not even freaking expensive! The vast majority of my books sell for less than five dollars. Most distributors give discounts at certain times, so you can sometimes pick them up for less than a large mocca. And I do giveaways all the bloody time! To be honest if someone emailed me and said how much they'd like to read my books, but couldn't afford them, I'd probably give them free copies!

I want people to read my books, it's why I write. But at the same time I want to be able to write full time, and to do that I need to make enough money to pay my rent and feed my children. If everyone who had downloaded my books paid for them I'd have made enough money to live off for two months. That would have allowed me to write another two books and get a little closer to writing full time. As it is right now I write into the early hours of the morning and keep my fingers crossed they'll sell... Now I'm not stupid enough to think that everyone who has illegally downloaded my books would have paid for them... but if just ten percent had...

So basically this is a call out, rant, moan, grouch, to anyone who might be considering illegally downloading one of my books. Please take a moment to think about the hard work put in by the author (in the very early hours of the morning after a full day at work) and the money spent by the publisher. We do this because we love it, but we'd quite like to be paid for our efforts so we can do it some more... just think about that

So don't do it.

But really, I just read a post from Lisa Sanchez about how book piracy boils her blood, and I can understand how she feels. Just picture this:

You slave over a story for months and months, and you pour your entire being and heart into this story. Your hopes and dreams are resting within it, through the re-writes, the edits, the edits... the edits... and then, if you manage to get a publisher, you have to go through even more re-writes, more edits--all the preparation and stress and glory and fear and etc, and etc, of the publication process, and then you put yourself out there in the world for everyone to read and love/criticize. You hope and pray that your book will sell, that all those months and months and months of work and obsessive, detail-reliant, intensive concentration and perfecting will render wonderful fruits. And then, as you hold your breath and cross every appendage and pray that people will see your book's merit and buy it and want to share it, you get a google alert stating that people are requesting stolen copies of your novel--that your livelihood on paper, whether it's intended to mean this or not, isn't worth the 4.99 for an ecopy.

This kind of stings a little, because, while we are always pleased that people want to read our work, it isn't a good feeling to think that there is theft involved. Believe me, authors spend a lot of their own personal resources and exhaustive time in sharing and promoting their work, so if you see an instance of piracy, I encourage you to speak up against it. You're helping to make it possible for us to continue writing our books, and really, that means more than you can imagine.

Through a group of authors and publishers which has just recently formed, it’s become incredibly clear that there are an enormous number of people who don’t really understand what an e-book is, or the laws concerning their distribution. E-piracy is rampant and it’s a rare author who hasn’t had at least one of his or her books stolen and given, or sold, without permission.

I believe most people simply don’t realize that e-books are different from the print books they own. Those are perfectly legal to trade or gift to someone else. When we think of piracy online, most people immediately think of music. How many artists have lost enormous amounts of money because of people down loading their tunes? Hundreds? Thousands? That’s a lot of music and a hell of a lot of money being taken from the struggling musicians.

I’ve heard readers say they didn’t realize they weren’t allowed to pass their legal bought e-books on. To be honest, I believe some of these people. The internet and our e-publishing industry are really pretty new, so the rules and regulations are still being made, in some cases. There are still millions of people who are blissfully unaware of e-books and the variety of e-readers available now. Education is paramount so our industry doesn’t falter before it even gets its feet under itself.

In the front of ever legal copy of an e-book sold, there’s a warning that states: All rights reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced in any material form, whether by printing, photocopying, scanning or otherwise without the written permission of the publisher.

Applications should be addressed, in writing, to the publisher. Unauthorized or restricted acts in relation to this publication may result in civil proceedings and/or criminal prosecution.

This was loosely based on the text used by Total E-Bound Publication and it’s in the front of every one of their e-books sold. The trouble is, it’s where readers skim by so they can get to the good stuff. How many of us pick up a pocket book and read the first few pages? You know, the bits about who published it and when, the ISBN, that sort of thing. The print is usually small, the message foreign and unexciting. That’s not why they bought the book. They want the story!

What we have to get through to those readers, those wonderful fans and buyers, is that e-books are very much the same as the books they buy in their favorite brick and mortar bookstore in only some respects. The authors work as hard, they spend weeks, months, sometimes years, creating that story you’re dying to get your hands on. They’ve spent nearly as long waiting to hear from publishing houses and then going through the myriad of edits and possibly re-writes to polish their babies. The difference comes when it’s actually published. One, you can pick up and walk out of the store with. That one costs more, takes up space in your home, kills a tree or two for you to hold in your hands and is transferable. The other, the e-book, is much easier to access. All you have to do is get on your computer, go to the website of the publisher, or Fictionwise, Amazon, or wherever your publisher has chosen to sell your books, and then you pay your little bit, then download a file to your computer. Some download to readers, some to laptops, but it’s not a book you can actually hold in your hands. The good things are, they cost much less, they’re incredibly easy to get your hands on and fast, and there’s no trees cut to create the book. The downside is, you may not transfer that file without permission. It’s against the law to do so. You may not upload it to eBay. You may not give it to a friend.

When you purchase that file, it’s like you’ve purchased a program such as Windows XP. That program is non-transferable, right? You have code numbers to prove it’s your copy, right? Well, e-books don’t have the code, yet, but they are still a program you’ve bought for yourself and which is illegal to give to someone else.

Pirate sites may say they’re not doing any harm. They may tell you that you’re only allowed to download for personal use. They may tell you all kinds of pretty things, but, did they tell you that to download a copy of some author’s books is illegal? That if caught, you could wind up in court? Did they tell you that publishers strive to have their sites shut down, because the pirate is taking money not only from them, but from the authors?

That author, who you might think is making money hand over fist is most likely working a day job in order to pay for his or her writing career. There are very few Stephan King’s out there. Most authors make just enough to pay a bill or two and that’s it. Some authors, if they’re incredibly lucky, have a spouse who helps support them so they can write.

So please, if you’re tempted to download from one of those pirate sites, think about it. An e-book costs you what, $5 on average. That’s not a huge amount of money. Yet, to an author, it’s a much treasured sale. Many books cost a great deal less, some as little as a dollar. That really isn’t a lot and out of that dollar, the author will see less than half. Royalties aren’t huge. Again, I beg you; think about what that thoughtless download means to your favorite author. He or she loses money, each and every time someone downloads their books for free. That could mean that author won’t be able to keep writing. It could mean a publishing house isn’t making enough to carry on, and they go under.

If you’re brave enough, go one step further and pass the word along. Tell others that e-piracy is hurting authors. It’s taking their hard earned money right out of their hands. It could very well be killing a dream.

Like the pirate talk? It’s appropriate, because I’m going to rant in this post about e-piracy. This post will have language and various other “Dina has been sent into orbit” visuals.

What’s set me off, you might ask.

People looking for copies of my work on illegal filesharing sites isn’t new. I’ve been dealing with piracy of my stuff since I was first published back in 2008.

People looking for copies of BOOKS I HAVEN’T EVEN WRITTEN YET on illegal filesharing sites is new. People REQUESTING, already, my NEXT BOOK in my first series.

This, contrary to what some might think, is NOT flattery. Some would say, “Well, Dina! Your books are obviously getting popular! That’s so great!”

WRONG. That’s like saying, “Wow! You have the nicest house on the block! No wonder people try to break in and steal your stuff every day!” or “Wow! You have the best car in town! No wonder people steal it constantly!”

Get it now? E-piracy is NOT flattering. It’s not indicative of popularity. A publisher isn’t going to say, “You know, that Dina James is always being pirated. She’s obviously hella popular. Let’s offer her a contract and pay her lots of money because she’ll sell really well. Look how popular she is on all those torrents!”

Yeah. NOT gonna happen.

Now, we have formerly (questionably) sane politicians in Europe wanting to make it even easier for people to steal (via Plagiarism Today).

I had a big excerpt from that article here, along with my own snarky translations as to what it REALLY means, but it disgusted me so much I deleted it.

Bottom line is this, people: If you like my work, DON’T STEAL IT.

Because you know what? If this shit keeps up, you’re going to piss me off to the point to where I won’t write another fucking word JUST to deny you the ability to post anything else of mine. Out of nothing but pure spite.

Honestly, why should I write anything else? What incentive do I have to create a world for people to enjoy for a few hours when there are those out there who honestly believe they have the right to steal from me because I have something they want? Should I do it because there are people out there who want to read my stuff and pay me for it?

Actually, yeah.

Yeah, I know. Believe me. It’s the real, true fans that I think about whenever I see someone hitting my site looking to steal from me. Whenever I get a Google Alert from YET ANOTHER filesharing/torrent site telling me that my work is YET AGAIN available for one’s stealing pleasure. It’s the people who enjoy my work that I think about, and it helps. One fan makes a hundred pirate hits worth it.

But it’s seriously frustrating to see people looking for things I haven’t even written yet. Vultures circling overhead. Thieves stalking me as I walk down the street, just waiting for me to stop so they can snatch my purse. Honestly, it’s disheartening.

HEAR ME, PIRATES. I WILL TURN THIS CAR AROUND. I don’t care who started it, I’ll fucking finish it.

I’m also dispirited. It’s not even release day and I already have people looking not only for the novel that’s due out on Tuesday, but for the next one, another novel I haven’t even written yet, and two others I’ve only mentioned.

Again, this isn’t flattering.

This is sad.

Now I go to drink tea, knit, and watch movies I’ve legally purchased and forget about assholes for awhile.

Thank you to all the awesome, loyal readers and fans out there who wouldn’t dream of pirating my work. You all support me in more ways than monetary. It’s for you I continue to write, and fight pirates.

Oh yeah, I’m going there. Buckle up, sit back and enjoy the rant.

I am naive. Yes, it’s true. I grew up believing puppies were loved, employers were faithful, people were generally good and all my neighbors were paying for their cable. I was a generally optimistic young woman. One of the Golden Rules I believed in most was you got what you paid for. The key here being the last two words: paid for. Yep, I believed in humanity’s honesty. As I prepare for the release of my book in its digital format (print releases next summer), I’ve been warned over and over by other authors to watch for pirates. “Pirates?” I asked, laughing. The awkward silence that followed confirmed they weren’t joking.

Pirating digital books is becoming more and more common. People obtain a copy of the book and reformat it to re-sell…repeatedly. This is blatant theft, and those stealing are thieves. Dress it up and call it “piracy” or whatever, but it’s thievery and the people doing it suck.

Knowing I’ll have to fight piracy and plagiarism when Legacy comes out makes me angry. I’ve been told by another author that her book was pirated with hours of it being released. Hours. I’m liable to blow a real gasket when this happens and I’m sure, sooner or later, I’m going to be faced with this reality.

I still believe that there are good people in the world, but I approach unknown names and faces with sincere caution these days. I’ve learned the hard way that loyalty and honesty don’t always pay dividends, particularly in the workplace, but they sure as hell help me sleep better at night. I also happen to know at least one of my neighbors pays for his cable.

I’ll face literary piracy with my eyes wide open and my fists clenched because I intend to fight the thieves who steal my books. Fortunately, my publisher supports their authors in the fight. If you steal my book, I will use every option afforded me under the law to stop you. Will I be successful? I’ll do my best, but thieves are sneaky. The one thing I’ll always have over the craptacular liars, bullies, cheaters and thieves is this: Karma. And from what I hear, She’s a real bitch.

This is the story of an avid reader. A regular JoAnn who stops at Starbucks and buys her double double mocha latte with extra foam on her way to the bookstore. It’s a wonderful day. She’s visited her favorite author’s websites and has her list all ready.

The bookstore is bustling and JoAnn gets all caught up in the excitement of adding to her “to be read” pile. She peruses the paranormal shelf, choosing a couple of books, even picking up a book written by a debut author. She then heads over to check out the latest releases in the historical section. gathering several more books and finishes her visit in the erotic romance section bashfully picking out the backlist of her favorite authors. With two bags filled with books, she heads to the front of the store.

But on her way to the register she comes across someone who has all the books in her bags for free. That’s right. Completely free.

“Why are you buying those books. I’ll give them to you for free.”

“Wow, why don’t they cost me anything?”

“Oh, I got one copy of the book and made more copies. I’m happy to give them away.”

“Well, if you’re here in the bookstore, then it must be legal.”

“Who cares if it’s legal. Everyone’s doing it. Besides authors are rich. They’ve already been paid to write the books.”

“Well, then I’ll take one of everything you’ve got.”

People wouldn’t do this. Of course it would never happen in a bookstore. But it happens all the time on the internet. As much as authors shout from the rafters about internet piracy and their bottom lines, readers don’t seem to understand how much money authors and publishers are losing to these thieves.

I don’t usually get too uptight about people pirating my books. I’ve never had many downloaded. But in the last two days, one of my best selling books has been downloaded 22,000 times … for free. I made no money from these books that were stolen from me. I’m sick. I’m not foolish enough to think that all of these people would have purchased the book, but even if a third of them had, I could make my mortgage payment from the royalties off those sales for THREE months!

THREE MONTHS!

And now I’m pissed. Downright indignant that people continue to think this practice is all right. Worse than the torrent sites offering books for free are people who go on ebay or create their own sites and SELL illegal copies of books. Talk about adding insult to injury!
I’m not sure if everyone understands that authors who write for digital publishers don’t get paid advances. My hard work is only rewarded when people BUY my books and I get royalties from the sales. Writing is what pays my bills. There isn’t anyone who wants to work a full week making widgets only to have all the widgets given away and the business not paying them for their time. Yeah, it’s the same thing.

I know I’m preaching to the choir here on the blog. You’re all wonderful authors and readers and I appreciate all of you. But seriously, I’m beyond frustrated with this particular website that’s giving away my book and all the people who visit it and steal from me. I’m fortunate that my publisher actually has someone who sends out cease and desist letters, but they take time to get the books taken down. Congress is working on copyright infringement laws, but they’re just not coming through fast enough for me. I believe if the music industry was able to fight the illegal downloads, the publishing industry will be able to follow suit.

In the meantime, please get your books from reputable sites where the author and publisher are making money from the sales.

Secretaries, editors and cover artists also depend on book sales for their salaries.

Because seriously, this kind of pirate isn’t sexy at all!

Looking for free Shiloh Walker ebooks?

Well, with the exception of this one or those given (legally) away in contests, you're not going to find any free ones.

Piracy comes with costs... to the publisher, to the author, and yes, to the reader. it costs you books. Want to know how? Read on.

When you look for 'free Shiloh Walker ebooks' and end up on a torrent site or a filesharing site, the books you find aren't really free-they cost me. The ones you find will be illegal, unauthorized copies. They are unauthorized and they are illegal. It's copyright infringement.

Unsure on what constitutes copyright infringement? Here's the bottom line. I own the books I write. I created them. I contract with publishers who then pay me to release to books for readers to read. Readers buy the one copy and they are entitled to do whatever they want...with that one copy. But when you uploaded onto a filesharing site or a torrent site-it's no longer one copy. You have made copies-they are unauthorized copies. That is illegal. If you don't believe me...here's what the FBI has to say about copyrighted works:

"Warning: The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to 5 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000."

So maybe now you're thinking... "I don't upload to filesharing sites. I just download. Whoever uploaded them is the one in trouble." Wrong. Did you hear about the woman who was fined $1.9 million because she downloaded roughly 20 songs?

The US Copyright Office says:

"Uploading or downloading works protected by copyright without the authority of the copyright owner is an infringement of the copyright owner's exclusive rights of reproduction and/or distribution. Anyone found to have infringed a copyrighted work may be liable for statutory damages up to $30,000 for each work infringed and, if willful infringement is proven by the copyright owner, that amount may be increased up to $150,000 for each work infringed."

By placing one of my books on a filesharing site, you're breaking the law. You do not have my authorization, and I can't give it because it violates my contract. I can't give it, because if I give my work away for free, how do I meet my responsibilities?

Now maybe you're thinking..."well, ya know... your responsibilities aren't my problem."

No...they aren't. They are mine and I'm just fine with that. However, when you pirate my work, whether you realize it or not, you're contributing to a problem I've been dealing with, and if you enjoy my work? It does affect you.

How?

Writing is my job. It is how I pay for my obligations, it's how I provide for my family...and ironically, it's what allows me to continue to write. Writing isn't free. I spent thousands every year on books, research, contests, promotional needs, and health issues that I've developed because of writing. If I don't make money writing, I won't continue to write.

Now I don't see me hanging up my writer's hat any time soon. But... I have ended a series. The deciding factor were money and piracy. The Mythe series is pretty much dead. I have no plans at this point to continue it. If you want more detail, follow the link. But the series is pretty much over and will remain unfinished.

So if you liked that series and you pirate books, you added to that problem and you helped bring about this decision.

What about the Hunters? The vamp/shifter series is certainly my most popular series. No, I'm not ending that one any time soon. But piracy played into a decision that is going to cost readers books.

My writing is a business and I have to treat it as such. I came to the decision that I should place my work where it's going to be the biggest benefit to my career. I decided the best place for the Hunters books was Berkley, one of my mainstream publishers. Issues with piracy was one of the deciding factors and because of those issues, I switched the Hunter books to my mainstream publisher. Here's where it affects readers: With my epubs, I could put out 2-4 Hunter books a year. With my mainstream publisher, the plan is one a year, possibly two after I wrap up the Veil series. Mainstream publishers require longer story lengths, so the shorter ideas I had will remain unwritten unless I can figure out a way to either lengthen the story or combine them for a single author anthology. Bottom line?   Readers are getting fewer Hunter books. It sucks-it sucks for me, and it sucks for those who enjoy my books enough to either buy them or check them out from the library...through those legal channels. If it sucks for the pirates, well, sorry, but I couldn't care less. Those pirates are the main reason I made that decision.

This is also the reason I don't have as many ebooks releasing from my epubs. I'm focusing of my efforts on where it has the most benefits for my career, which is my mainstream publishers. Adds up to fewer books, because I don't have releases as often through my mainstream publishers.

Now please, don't had me any of the excuses pirates just love to hand out. If you didn't realize it was wrong, at this point, you do. With all do respect, I ask you, please, stop. You're hurting authors, which ironically means you're also shooting yourself in the foot. If you have any respect at all for writers, don't pirate. If you do pirate, whatever respect you claim to have is empty.

Those who 'know' it's wrong but don't care...or those who hand out the excuses? Don't want to hear them, thanks. I've heard them.

#1 Excuse- But most of us who pirate turn around and buy the book anyway.

If this was true, I would have hit the big bestseller lists, I would have paid off all of my debts and I would have already have my kids' college funds nicely padded. Sorry. It's not true. I keep track of how many times get downloaded and like I mentioned before, some of them have been pirated more than they have sold, so there's no way the majority of pirates turn around and buy the book. I've seen the numbers-I know how many books I sell and I've seen how many get pirated. Pirates can claim that line all they want, but I've seen the numbers. The numbers trump those claims.

#2 Excuse- But I don't have the money to buy it and I love to read.

I can sympathize with not having the money and loving to read. More than you know. I grew up dirt-poor. I got my books by riding 15 miles roundtrip every week to the local library on a secondhand bike somebody gave me. I checked out 10 books, loaded them into my backpack and then went back home, read them and returned them. I had a paper route that gave me a little bit of cash so that one or twice a month, I could go buy one or two new paperbacks. I understand not having money. But as my responsibilities aren't your problem, your lack of money isn't my problem. There are libraries. There are free, legal reads on the web. Baen has a number of free ebooks on their site. Samhain has some free reads. On a regular basis, the Sony ebook store has free reads and you don't need a Sony reader to read them. Plenty of authors have free promo reads on their sites, like the one I listed above. So you can find free, legal reads, if you look.

#3 Excuse-But the books are in English and I don't read English well. The only way I can read them is if I download one of the pirated translations.

You know what? I can understand that, too. But you're still breaking the law. You're breaking US law and if you're not a US citizen, you're breaking the copyright laws of your country-just about every country has laws in place to protect copyright. As a non-English speaker, you could possibly help bring about a change that would make the books available in your language, in your country and in a way that would benefit other readers and the author. Find a publisher that publishes in your language. Email them. Get your friends to do the same. Explain you're looking for more books by certain authors. Foreign publishers often contract with English publishers to obtain foreign rights translations-this would end up getting the book legally to your country and it's also in a way that benefits the writer and the publisher, and believe it or not, when the writer and the publisher benefit, that's a good thing for readers, because the publishers will want to expand and they'll likely make more books available. Plus, those translations will be professional translations.

#4 Excuse-But everybody does it.

This is the weakest, lamest excuse. Doing something because everybody else does it? Weak. Doing the right thing takes character. It takes strength. Doing something just because all your friends do it? That's weak...that's easy.

#5 Excuse-But the authors don't really care.

You're wrong. We do. You're taking something you have no right to. If we hadn't created the works, they wouldn't exist. That gives us legal rights to those works and when you trample on them, we care-every bit as much as you would care if somebody trampled all over your legal rights.

#6 Excuse-But the authors don't need the money.

This is yet another crock-
Point #1-I do need the money. Frankly, if I didn't need the money, I wouldn't bust my butt to put out books as often as I do-I write a pace that has put so much stress on my hands and wrists, as I mentioned, I'm facing yet another surgery. I maintain this pace because at this point, my career demands it and I need my career to provide for my kids. Since you aren't me, you can't make the decision if I need the money or not.

Point #2-It doesn't matter if the author needs the money-they are legally entitled to it. They created the work. They are entitled to the compensation. But you are not legally entitled to take whatever you want.

#7 Excuse-But piracy doesn't really hurt the authors.

You're wrong. You know what determines whether or not an author gets a contract renewed with the publisher? Sales. So every sale counts. (And if you're thinking the bestsellers are pretty much guaranteed new contracts...see excuse #6.) For newer authors and or those of us who haven't yet made it big, every single sale is crucial. Especially now. Publishers are tightening their belts and authors who don't sell enough don't get renewed contracts. Ironically enough, a couple of authors I've seen mentioned by pirates... "When is her next book coming out..." I can tell you a couple of them didn't get their contracts renewed. And those who pirated instead of buying? You contributed to that.

Also-sales are lost to piracy. Plain and simple. When sales are lost, money is lost. One thing that publishers do when money is lost? Jack up prices. Now I don't if any publisher has raised prices just because of piracy, but prices do go up. Since money is lost to piracy, it's entirely possible that piracy is one of the deciding factors. So other readers are paying for your pirating. Not very nice on your part.

#8 Excuse-But writers write to get read. They should just be grateful people read them.

You know what? When you legally buy/checkout/etc my books-whether you love them or hate them-I am grateful. My career wouldn't be where it is if it wasn't for those readers. But if you're illegally downloading my work, you didn't contribute to my career, and I'm not in the least bit grateful to you. I'm grateful to those who buy me in stores, those who request me in libraries. I'm not grateful to pirates.

If you're on the ones buying to 'share' them on filesharing/torrent sites-sorry, not grateful to you, either. Maybe you bought, but you're contributing to the problem. Writers don't write just to get read. If we did that, we wouldn't go through the hard-work of haggling contracts, dealing with edits, paying for promo, maintaining websites, maintaining a web presence, buying bookmarks, paying for research material, or writing ourselves in nerve damage that results in surgery.

We write because it is our job.

I'm a writer and I love it when people love my work, but my end reward isn't having people love my work-my end reward is knowing that I'm able to use this talent in a way that provides for my family.   That is my reward, and when you pirate, I don't get it, so spare me...I shouldn't be grateful for those who pirate my work. I'm grateful to those who have the decency and the respect to pay for my work, or request it from libraries, etc, etc.

#9 Ebooks cost less to produce, so they shouldn't cost so much, and if they were cheaper, I'd buy.

Ebooks cost less in some ways. Yes. But there are still costs. The editors have to be paid. The writers have to be paid. The cover artists have to paid. The websites must be maintained.   There are formatting costs. There are costs associated with getting books to legit e-tailers like the Sony store and Amazon's Kindle store.

Plus, the publisher has to make a profit.

If writers, editors, cover artists, publishers, don't make money...why should they continue to do it? Writing might be an art, but getting your work published requires a writer to think about it like a business. If that line of thinking bothers you, then by all means, go find websites where people put their work up for free. They can just write for the sake of art. But if I wrote for the sake of art alone, I wouldn't be able to provide for my family. Sorry, they are more important than writing for the sake of 'art'.

#10 Writers are all rich. Readers are broke. We're just trying to help them out.

I'd like to know what Utopia you live in, where are all writers are rich. Are some? Yes. But you know what? They busted the butts off to get that way and they earned it.

Now, I hate to burst your bubble, but not all writers are rich. Matter of fact, I can count on one hand how many I know (as in having met them) who could be called rich. Most of us? We're just working stiffs. Yep...working stiffs. Most of us don't drive new, pricy sports cars or luxury SUVS. My car is five years old and I bought it used. My husband? His car is close to 10 years old, and he bought it used. We don't live in some designer home with thousands of square feet, we don't go shopping for designer clothes on Rodeo Drive and we don't take luxury vacations that cost more than some cars. Most writers have the same bills you have, most writers have to mess with mortgages and quite a few of us have to shell out thousands a year for health care, because we're self-employed.

We're not rich so if you've got some Robin-Hood complex going, you're deluding yourself. More likely, you're just using it as an excuse to do what you want and screw those you hurt.

Piracy irritates me. It depresses me. Contrary to what some people think, sad and depressed isn't always all that conducive to creativity. When I'm in that state of mind, I don't write well. While I'm usually able to compartmentalize, I don't always do it-suppressing it just makes it worse so from time to time, I let it out, and when I'm doing that? I'm not writing. Which means...fewer books.

Piracy irritates me. I know the value of hard work and I respect it. People are not entitled to take just whatever they want, because other people end up paying for it and I have too much respect for others to take what I have no right to. Some pirates seem to want authors to 'respect' them, but respect is a two way street. You can't expect it from us unless you're willing to give it, and you can't respect us when you're trampling all over a writer's legal rights.

Piracy irritates me. I spent hours dealing with pirates. Hours. Those are hours that could be spent writing.

And I'm not the only author who does this. Many, many authors are vigilant about this and unless they can afford to have an assistant deal with it, the author is the one doing it. So while the author is dealing with pirates, they aren't writing.

When writers have to set time aside from writing to deal with pirates, they aren't writing. When a writer doesn't get contracts renewed because of flat sales, she doesn't have a new book coming out. If you pirated instead of buying, you contributed to that.

In the long run, one thing that piracy costs you? More books.

“Free” Books Aren’t Free

I’m so frustrated.

This morning, I woke up to one of my best author friends deeply upset. A “fan” on Twitter had cheerily informed her that she illegally torrented a copy of that author’s book since the mean old publishers in her region hadn’t made it available. Never mind that it WAS actually available in that region; I hear that a lot.

They don’t sell your book in my $location, so I downloaded it.

I also hear, I will buy it later, and I don’t have any money, but I want to read it. Authors should make publishers print in $region! and I hate DRM. I download it, but then I recommend it to other people to buy!

I’ve been very open about the money I’ve made and not made, to help give the writing community some perspective. So I’m going to be very open about money today. I’ve told you before that I made a $15,000 advance on SHADOWED SUMMER. In two years, I’ve managed to earn back $12,000 of that.

It’s going out of print in hardcover because demand for it has dwindled to 10 or so copies a month. This means I will never get a royalty check for this book. By all appearances, nobody wants it anymore.

But those appearances are deceiving. According to one download site’s stats, people are downloading SHADOWED SUMMER at a rate of 800 copies a week. When the book first came out, it topped out at 3000+ downloads a week.

If even HALF of those people who downloaded my book that week had bought it, I would have hit the New York Times Bestseller list.

If the 800+ downloads a week of my book were only HALF converted into sales, I would earn out in one more month. But I’m never going to earn out. And my book is never going to be available in your $region, not for lack of trying. My foreign rights agent is a genius at what she does, and has actively tried to sell it everywhere- UK, AU, China, France, you name it, she tried to sell it there.

SHADOWED SUMMER will only be coming out in Italy, because that’s the only place there’s a market for it.

And let me tell you guys… the sales figures on SHADOWED SUMMER had a seriously detrimental effect on my career. It took me almost two years to sell another book. I very nearly had to change my name and start over. And my second advance? Was exactly the same as the first because sales figures didn’t justify anything more. I don’t blame my publisher. There’s weak demand for my books, according to my sales figures.

Meanwhile, 800 copies of my book (worth about $1200 toward my advance, if everyone paid for a copy,) are being downloaded a week.

And now, one of the top search terms on my website for THE VESPERTINE, a book that won’t even come out until March is, “download vespertine +saundra”. They have to put my name in because otherwise, they’re looking for a way to illegally download Bjork’s album.

Guys, seriously. I know it sucks to have to wait. I know it sucks when a book isn’t available in your region. Seriously, I know. I just paid a friend $15.00 for an $8.00 paperback, so I could get a copy of RJ Anderson’s ARROW. A book, I might add, that I read last year when RJ sent me the manuscript.

I know DRM sucks. I know region-limitation sucks. And I know being poor sucks (as I just told you, I’ve made 30k over the course of 4 years now, that’s like $7500/year. I totally know being poor sucks.) But when you illegally download a book, you’re simply guaranteeing that a publisher will look at my royalty statements next year and decide not to publish the next one. Promises to recommend my book to other people never seem to pan out- sales still drop, downloads remain steady.

If you really love books, find a way to pay for them. The WORLD wide web is, in fact, world-wide. I bet you know someone in the region that sells the book you want. I bet even if you don’t, you can connect with a fellow book-lover in that region on Twitter.

If you REALLY can’t afford books, ask your library to order them. I love libraries. I love them so much- they buy lots and LOTS of copies, and will rebuy them if they’re very popular. Many are even starting to buy digital copies, so you can read them on your e-reader. When you check my book out from the library, you’re paying for it, just indirectly.

If you really, REALLY can’t afford books, and live in a mushroom village that has no library, then write to my publisher’s publicity department. Ask them for a review copy. And by god, if you get a free review copy- review it! Send that review to my publisher so they can use it! Post it on bookseller websites! Give the review copy away to other readers when you’re done. Pay for it with sweat equity- spreading the word is buying my books.

And honestly? If you’re just going to download it illegally anyway, don’t tell me. I’d rather not be personally acquainted with the people pushing me out of the publishing business because the book they want isn’t available at the price, or the format, or the region they want it in RIGHT NOW.

Because that’s what it boils down to is convenience. People who illegally download books are more interested in their convenience than in supporting the authors they want to read. It’s not hard to go to the library, it just takes time. It’s not hard to buy a physical copy and convert it to a personal digital copy if you’re willing to make the time and effort. It’s not hard to buy a legal digital copy and convert it to the format you want. Dear Author has tutorials. It’s not hard to ask someone in the $region to post you a copy.

You simply have to want to. So if you were inclined to illegally download anyone’s book, if you’re one of the people trying to find an illegal download of my brand new book that’s not even in stores yet: please buy it. Or check it out. Or ask for a review copy.

Or please read another book that’s instantly, and legally, available to you so that books continue to be instantly, and legally, available to you.

Does piracy of books hurt? It destroys lives.

I knew a lovely lady. She became one of my closest friends. Our friendship was formed on the internet. Likely, we would have never known each other without that magic connection. But that link, while bringing the world to your home, also offers you a mask. Dawn hid herself from the world. Few knew Dawn Thompson was a paraplegic. She could stand, take a step or two, but otherwise, she was trapped in a wheelchair, day in, day out, for the last years of her life.

It was always Dawn’s dream to be an author. The power, the gift of storytelling was in her heart, in her soul. Dawn would have written even if she never was published because the magic was a part of her. Just as she was about to make it in publishing, she was nearly killed in a car accident. It left her with legs that no longer served her, and hands that had not been properly cared for during hospitalization, thus were curled back, useless. She only had use of her index fingers and her thumbs. But oh did she make use of those remaining digits! Dawn wrote dozens of books, most were published by Kensington Books and Dorchester Publishing.

While it was her dream to be published, it also was her necessity to sell her novels. It was one of the few ways left to her where she could raise money to support herself. She was left with a very small disability check, not enough to allow her to survive. She needed that money that would come from her books. In 2007, Dawn was on the verge of being a bestselling author, and her plans were not to buy a second home in Florida or Hawaii, nor buy that yacht we laughingly hear so much about. Dawn’s plans were to have a roof over her head, an apartment in a reasonably safe neighborhood, food for her and for her cat and medicine, the basics that many of us―most of us―take for granted. In the final years of her life, she expanded that drive to want to protect her sister. Her younger sister Candy is also disabled. Dawn thought she could write, sell lots of books and she, the cat and Candy would get by. Nothing fancy, just to be safe, have medicines and decent meals.

My heart broke when I called Dawn one day and she was crying. I finally got the story out of her―what the proud Dawn was trying to hide―just how dire her situation was. She barely had money for food, a condition that had been going on for months. She knew if she could make it until the end of the year, the royalties from her books would actually be giving her the means to survive. She was crying because she was rationing her tea. Tea was a luxury she couldn’t afford, so she allowed herself ONE teabag each Sunday as a treat for herself. Dawn had a helper supplied by the government that came in for a couple hours five days a week. And the aid just went into the kitchen, helped herself to the last tea bag. Dawn wouldn’t have her tea on Sunday. I sat and cried. One teabag per week? How sad was that?

Dawn was so close to making it, but because of the lack of good food she grew weak, and after a long day of work finishing a book, she collapsed as she tried to move from the wheelchair to the bed. As she battled for her life in hospital, she took steps to protect her sister. She gave Candy several of her remaining unpublished books outright, and assigned the rights and royalties of the ones already published to Candy. If the worst came, she wanted Candy taken care of.

The worst did come. We lost Dawn in February 2008, but she died with the belief Candy wouldn’t face the horrible circumstances of choosing between medicine and food, that her pain and hard work would provide the means to take care of her sister. Only Candy is not secure. Her fate is very dire, as bad as what faced Dawn. Maybe worse.

Sad, you say, but how does this relate to piracy?

Simple. Dawn wrote for two publishers, but the one that has control of most of her books is Dorchester Publishing. Recently, they informed the public they were restructuring their business, dropping the mass market line, and moving to only e-book and trade size. Why? Because they are not selling mass market paperbacks on a level to stay in the black. Why should people pay for books, when they can get on the net and enter a name of a book or author and find dozens, hundreds of places where they can download books free. Illegally. People are giving away books, or even more heinous, selling them. They are making money off the hard work of others. When I put in Dawn’s name in a search engine, I shall find her books listed on so many pirate sites it’s sickening. One place selling one of her books illegally had over 4800 downloads. Just ONE book on ONE site. Yes, all those downloading the book might not have ever bought it. But many probably would have. People who professed to love her books would have bought her next book, and her next. Now, why should they pay, when it’s minutes to locate a novel, second to download? To steal it.

These criminals ―yes, THAT is what they are ―make money off Dawn’s works. They are stealing. Dawn used to arise at 7am and would work all day and night and finally struggle into bed around 1am. SEVEN days a week. The whole time she was in agony from metal rods and pins in her body, along with sitting in a wheel chair eighteen hours a day. Those thieves are making money off her agony. The money venues/handlers such as PayPal are making money off Dawn’s pain.

And now they are stealing from Dawn’s sister. They say they aren’t hurting anyone, justifying their criminal activities, because each book is only the “price of a cup of coffee.” But multiply that by two dozen books, multiply that by thousands of downloads, multiply that by dozens, maybe hundreds, even thousands of sites stealing from Dawn’s sister. Suddenly, you are talking about a lot of money. Candy is on very limited means. She gets disability, but is too young for Medicare so she has no medical treatments for dangerously high blood pressure and arthritis. She cannot drive, cannot walk but a few steps with a walker. Currently, she is rooming in a place, and the situation is dangerous to her health. Every penny matters to her simply surviving.

So the next time someone says they can get a book offline cheap, and they aren’t hurting an author because, after all, they all live in big, fancy homes and have a yacht, think again. You are stealing food from people, medical care, a decent place to live. You are stealing people’s hard work. The next time you search out your favorite author on a torrent, before you push that button know you are stealing from people’s children, and you hurt people’s ability to support themselves. Ask yourself, if you would work at your job when people refused to pay you and yet expected you to perform anyway? Could you survive in a job where you might not get money for months, years?

You are stealing. Plain and simple. There is no justification for that. You are hurting people, and none of the blithe rationalizations can whitewash that bald fact.

You probably have all heard atleast a LITTLE of the drama that seems to have clogged up my twitter stream since early this morning, concering the illegal downloading of books online. How I see it is this - I don't think it's unreasonable to wake up and check your twitter stream and find nice conversations and lovely @ replies from friends. I do not think it is unreasonable to not ever be told that someone has stole something from you. But oh, wait, not to worry, because really it's all YOUR fault.

In this instance i'm taking about, a lady on twitter told one of my favourite authors, who shall be called Sarah Rees Brennan (because i'm all about the smoke and mirrors) that she had illegally downloaded a copy of her book because she couldn't find the correct format for her e-reader since she lived in Australia. She then went on to DEFEND her actions (even though she has blatantly STOLE from this person) and pointed out that Sarah, as the author, should work harder to ensure her books are available in more countries and in more formats. God forbid that this woman should actually PAY for the shipping of the book, or actually maybe visit the library and tell one of the librarians what she was looking for. Who knows? maybe the librarian would've ordered and PAID for the book if they didn't already have it, because the demand is there. This one little request is proof that people want to read this book. This one tiny little request could mean LOTS more books from this author, because hey guess what? People actually want to BUY their books, and if people want to BUY their books then that means publishers will actually want to publish them.

Now, I don't like getting involved in this kind of thing. In fact, I try to avoid it at all costs. I do not know a lot about the publishing world and it would be vulgar and naive of me to act like I did. I am not saying that I am right. This is just my opinion. I would never presume to know better than some people on this particular subject but I do know this - STEALING IS AGAINST THE LAW. There are no grey areas on this subject. It is not subjective, it is what it is. It is black and white. You download a book from the internet illegally and you are breaking the law. Just because it is easier to download books and not get caught, does not mean that what you are doing is okay. That's just like saying "oh well, pardon me, they left their door wide open when they went out, they was basically *asking* to get robbed". You would not steal someone's purse. You would not walk into a bookstore and put a copy of a book you wanted into your bag and walk out. So why download illegally? I don't get it. And do not ever say it is not the same thing. It is EXACTLY the same thing.

From a readers perspective, people that do this kind of thing offend me in some personal way. I LOVE to read. I love it more than I probably should. A LOT of the books that I want to read are not published here in the UK. And you know what? I'm okay with that. Thats life. I can't always have my own way. My favourite author won't always have the UK rights to their books sold. My bookstore will never carry the books I want to buy because it costs too much too import them. You know what? IT SUCKS. It really really blows. But do I go online and download it illegally? NOPE. I sacrifice a LOT of money on buying imports of books. I sacrifice maybe going out with friends at the weekend because I want to buy books, and I can't just pop into the library and loan them because it's 99% likely my library doesn't even stock them. I order books online and PAY for them. Without Book Depository and Amazon I fear my social life would be non-existent because I would have to pay extortionate amounts on shipping. I swap books with friends, if I have a book a friend wants to read, we just trade and it makes it all the more satisfying. I hate to think that people can't get hold of books because I know how much it sucks, but that STILL doesn't give any of us the right to steal it from the author.

PLUS, for every book that's downloaded illegally, that authors sales figures will not increase as they should do. That means that their publishing house AND the author are not going to see the fruits of their labour. That means, if sales are not high, it's highly possible that author will never sell a book again. It's possible that by downloading a book illegally you have inadvertantly destroyed someones career. I don't know about you, but that's a really natsy, spiteful, hateful thing to do. It's possible that my favourite authors will never sell more books because people won't stop stealing from them. As a reader, I don't know how you can't feel shame about doing that. I don't know how you can do something that has the potential to affect a LOT of people. As a reader, you should love reading for the joy it brings you, for the conversations it starts, for its ability to unite the most different of people. As a reader, you should know how it feels to love a book so much you can't possibly wait another second for the next book that author is going to release. As a reader, how disappointed would you be to find out that because people stole from an author you love, you will never read another new word they have wrote? As a reader, how can you steal something from somebody knowing it could harm a lot of people, maybe even destroy them. How could you do that to someone? Who knows, you could even be harming yourself.

They don't do it [download books illegally] because they are evil but because they don't understand," he said. "In the music industry, when the price of music went down to zero – as it arguably now is because of filesharing - artists didn't mind that much. My music friends love it because they can make money through gigs and merchandising, they can put their faces on T-shirts. But I'm not a rock star and I don't have that as an option. If readers lose the habit of paying me for my work, I can't work. Writing is how I make my living."

(David) Hewson is angry that the people who run the torrent sites – which charge users a subscription – are making money on the back of his work. "I spent a year of my life working on [each of] those books," he said. "They cost me time and money. Hosts of people at my publishers, people who also have the right to be paid for their work, were involved. What gives some thieving toe-rag the right to take all that work we've put in, steal it, then regurgitate it for the masses?" He added: "They are not Robin Hood, taking from the rich to give to the poor. I find it offensive."

Pirating of my e-books and ARC's

    You never really think that much about piracy until it happens to you. I've always heard about it, I'd even been offered it before when searching for things on the internet, thought I didn't take it. But I tell you, to work on something for months all by yourself, to spend time away from your family and kids working on a book, doing research, editing, spending SO SO SO much time on on the interent and email about it. And to have someone come in and give it away to others or even sell it themselves for profits is the lowest blow.
    To be honest, I figured when I started this whole process that eventually, something like this would happen. It seems almost inevitable these days and I even got the vibe from some people when they found about about all 5 of my published books being pirated that it wasn't really a big deal. That there wasn't anything I could do and just don't worry about it. My hubby and some fans even tried to cheer me up and say that I was 'cool' enough to be pirated. I laughed but in the end, the whole sitting back and doing nothing thing...well, that sucked to me.
   So I reported the ones I found to the BSA. I even found some pdf copies on EBAY of all places. I contacted the people directly and some of them have removed the books from the sites and some have not. I've heard tons of stories about other authors books being pirated also and it seems we're all in the same boat. A whole lot of our work and time being given away and not a whole lot that's being done to stop it. As I said, it sucks.
    My books are only $0.99 or $2.99 to begin with.....
    I released my latest book, Accordance, early but only advertised that it was available on my Facebook fan page. And to find it also pirated the very next morning, before it was even officially released was just the final blow. I won't blame anyone who was given an ARC because it's just inconceivable. I unpublished from Smashwords, and I'm not bashing them, but I'm not ok with my stuff being taken from me. Now, unfortunately, my books aren't available for Nook right now. Barnes and Nobles is still processing them after over a week. I've contacted them several times but no word back yet as I continue to wait. And I've been contacted several times by folks looking for Nook copies of the books. I'm very sorry about that but it seems that old saying about the few ruining it for the rest of us is true.
   If you find a pirating site or hear someone talking about it, please don't encourage it. Report it. The easy, carefree way of buying books won't last if this keeps up. If you've ever read a book that made you smile, or made you think or cry, then thank that author by purchasing those books the legal way. Seriously. $0.99 to you may not seem like alot but to me, my little percentage is all I get for my hard work.

People, going on that site and downloading my books to read is stealing the royalties from me and other friends of mine who work HARD to bring you the books you enjoy. If you think its easy, sit down and write your own. I'm on oxygen 24/7. I had to stop going to all the conventions because my portable oxygen machine broke and I can't afford to fix it. I have to pay for oxygen tanks if I want to leave my house so when I tell you pirates are stealing the very air I breathe, I'm serious as a heart attack.

My disability check barely pays the rent and utilities. My royalties help pay my doctor co-pays and medicines. I had to put an appointment back because I didn't have the forty dollar co-pay. I'm sharing this not to gain sympathy, but to help bring home just how insidious and hurtful dealing with pirates can be for the authors you so-call love. Please...PLEASE stop stealing the air I breathe, the meds I need, the doctors I can't see because my royalty check is 47.63 but scribd shows ALL of my books, most of them having more than 500 reads. That's 500 copies no one bought because they didn't have to.

Because I've been ill, I haven't done anything new for almost two years, and now I've just finished some stories that it took me years to complete. I'm discouraged, because I've found this site offering all my books and I'm sick at heart to think all the work I've done...the nights I stayed up and the days I locked my door and turned the phone off so I could concentrate, will garner me just a pitiful 2 or 3 hundred royalty check the first month, when I could make more. I'll go one more step and tell you my van was repo'd on my birthday. When I say I don't have the money to support pirates, I mean it from the depths of my soul.

I don't do this often, but I'm sick. Sick. SICK of this.

Pirates wouldn't get anywhere if they didn't have people clicking on their sites. Are YOU stealing from your favorite writers? Think about it. Don't try to justify it by saying it's like borrowing a book from the library. It's not. Don't tell me I should be glad to have readers like my stuff so much, that I should be grateful that readers read me at all. Well guess what...? I'm too broke for that crap to fly. I'd rather the readers liked ME, not just my books. If they liked me, maybe they'd think again before stealing from me. If they were my friends, they'd think about the thirteen meds I have to buy monthly, and the fact that the few food stamps I get are not a portion of my food budget, but my WHOLE budget for food. Maybe they'll buy my books instead of pirating them so I can pay for the oxygen tanks Medicare won't pay for. They supply my home oxygen, but if I leave my house, I HAVE to pay.

I'm sorry for this long rant/plea but please bear with me. I'm begging. Help us shut down the pirates one at a time by BOYCOTTING them. If you don't go there, they lose out. And when you see a site, report it. Don't just sigh and say oh, poor Camille (Sandy).

Be active. Be proactive. Be reactive. Damnit, be my friend!

This post is in response to WhistleBlowers comment in the Let’s Do The Math Shall We blog post…

WhistleBlowers : MissWriterKitty, you are absolutely correct that theft is a crime, and the act of stealing is enough for someone to be guilty even if they are not planning on making a purchase. But where would that TV be if it hadn't been stolen? Would the shop owner have the money in her pocket or would the TV still be sitting on the shelf? Clearly the latter is right, and that's because there's little connection between those who steal things and those who purchase them. Other than the loss of what it costs to make a product (for an ebook=$0), there is no direct loss.

I’m not sure if WhistleBlower is under the impression that every person who puts out an e-book is self pubbed, therefore they really don’t have a cost, only to upload the book to the website that they plan to sell it from. I can’t speak for other authors but that’s not the case with me. I have THREE DIFFERENT publishers. Three of them, which means I have THREE different editors hitting me up for books all the time (Hi Mary, Maryam, and Sasha) So for me, each e-book I release comes with a price. Right now I’m not talking about the price the reader is charged but the price others have to pay to put said book out there.

Five different people who I've outed on facebook has closed their Scribd accounts. If this keeps up I'll have nothing to blog about....just so you know, I'd be okay with that.

This space was reserved for a certain someone who had a page on Scribd that I outed on my facebook page. I guess she didn't like the attention cause she closed her Scribd account.

This is how someone stole three thousand dollars from me by uploading and sharing just one book.

From this particular publisher, I make 35% of the cover price of the book. One of my titles from this publisher was downloaded from ONE uploader 1,740 times. The cover price of that particular book is 4.99 which means I had $3038.91 dollars stolen out of my purse like I went to Thanksgiving's at a crackheads house. That's my house note for two months. That's my daughter's daycare bill for 6 in a half months. That's money I can use.

If these thieves don't care that I'm losing money why should I care that I'm outing them to the world. Wait...I don't care. If you want your name off my site then you need to send me the same letter I have to send the media share sites when I ask them to remove MY material from their sites. You don't want to be embarrassed then stop stealing.
